Meet a ray of sunshine: Heather Magda!

Today, we want to introduce a heartwarming and inspirational Heather Magda, devoted radiation therapist from Southeast Radiation Oncology Center who shares her journey into radiation therapy—a story filled with passion, resilience, and personal growth.

Heather’s path was anything but straightforward. A self-proclaimed “professional student” in her early years, she was undecided about her career direction until a conversation with a coworker enlightened her about the field of radiation therapy.

This newfound awareness ignited a profound realization within her. The profession, combined with her personal experiences—most notably, the loss of her mother to cancer at the young age of 11—spurred her decision to make a difference through patient care. The word “cancer” had always cast a long shadow over her family, but with newfound strength and purpose, she found healing and empowerment in helping others.

Now, 14 years into her career, Heather continues to feel blessed and fulfilled by her work, providing compassionate care to those undergoing treatment. She attributes much of her joy to the warm camaraderie among her coworkers and the positive impact they collectively have on their patients’ lives. The touching moments they witness together, such as a woman bursting into tears to express her gratitude, underscore the profound role they play in patients’ journeys.

Heather’s dedication extends beyond the workplace. Outside her professional life, she cherishes the tranquility and beauty of Southeast Alaska, often accompanying her husband, Luke Magda, a remote-working IT specialist with a passion for photography, on hikes through nature’s wonders. These weekend excursions provide Heather with the perfect opportunity to recharge and reflect, as Luke captures the serene landscapes with his lens.

Their life together is enriched by a bit of unconventional agriculture—Heather has embraced her role as the “crazy chicken lady,” caring for eight hens that provide them with fresh eggs daily.

Their life in Juneau feels like a dream come true—a true testament to finding joy and balance through simplicity and shared passions. Celebrating their third wedding anniversary soon, Heather still thinks of her and Luke as newlyweds!

Throughout her career, Heather has experienced countless enriching moments, but one particularly touching memory stands out. A patient, who had his own challenges to face, heard of Heather’s struggle with an ermine—a mischievous little predator threatening her chickens—and surprised her with an ermine trap. His kindness, empathy, and willingness to help despite his own burdens reiterate the powerful human connections forged within therapeutic settings.

Heather Magda’s journey is not only about healing cancer patients but also about receiving and reciprocating the love and support from the community. Her passion, positivity, and relentless drive to make meaningful impacts on the lives of her patients remind us all of the profound power of empathy and human connection.
